The two axles are almost identical with the only differences being that the 10.25" has a 1/4" smaller ring gear and a one-piece differential case with 2 pinion gears. Both models use large 35 spline axle shafts, however, some versions of the Ford 10.25" came with semi-floating axle shafts while all Ford 10.5" axles are full-floating.
Pinion nut torque will not change the pattern on the gearset. Really cool part: You only need 125 ft-lb on the pinion nut so anybody can do it without a He-man impact or 4' cheater bar. If you have to pull apart to change a pinion seal or something, you just put it back together with the same shims & torque pinion nut to 125 ft-lb, no more dicking around. $15 bux
The snap ring keeps the key for the axle nut in place. Remove the key. It just slides out. Here is the axle nut after removal with the special socket. Here is the spindle with the emergency brake after the removal of the hub. The hub just pulls off. We used a brake adjustment tool to pry out the seal. Seal pullers can be purchased.

Apr 14, 2012 · For the Ford 10.25 and 10.5 axles pinion preload on new bearings should be 20-35 in-lbs. on used bearings it should be 6-8 in-lbs. Backlash spec should be set at .006-.010" regardless of wear. if you have too much backlash move the ring gear toward the pinion, if it's too tight then move it away. rule of thumb for setting backlash is move the carrier .010" for every .007" you need adjusted ...
